Last Year's Make a Difference Day
October 27, 2001

Volunteers across the nation gathered on Saturday, October 27 in efforts to protect the quality of our environment.

Nani O Waianae again conducted numerous activities on Make A Difference Day.  These included a battery roundup, storm drain stenciling, tree planting, trash pickup and educational displays.

As one of the activities for that day, the City and County of Honolulu together with Protect the Planet presented awards to youth groups who have participated in the First Annual Watershed Model contest.  The purpose of the project is to demonstrate to students the negative impact of nonpoint source pollution on our watersheds and ocean. The project achieves this by directly involving students in a hands-on activity of constructing and demonstrating a model of a portion of the watershed in their neighborhood.

Island-wide Cleanup to Fight Dengue Fever
October 13, 2001

Mayor Harris asked community, civic, religious, sports and professional groups to join the City in an island-wide educational effort on Saturday, October 13.  The goal was to distribute informational brochures to residents so that they can take steps to eliminate potential breeding places for mosquitoes that transmit Dengue Fever.  Mosquitoes breed anywhere water collects -- e.g., old tires and abandoned vehicles.

Individuals can do their part by inspecting their house and eliminating any standing water.  These include pans under flower pots, buckets, and pet water dishes. Empty the water and turn the containers upside down so that they can't collect unneeded water. Let plants drythoroughly before watering them again.  Spray potted plants with insecticide or a mixture of 4 ounces of liquid detergent to one gallon of water.
